Reception Celebrates Opening of Art Show at Franklin Park Arts Center

5th Annual Flora and Fauna Art Show and Sale, A Celebration of Spring

Purcellville, VA—Franklin Park Arts Center will host an opening reception for the fourth annual Flora and Fauna Art Show and Sale on Saturday April 17^th from 1 until 3 pm.  The show will feature local artists and include all mediums – watercolor, oil, pastel, mixed media and 3 dimensional works.

The opening reception will be held in the lobby gallery of Franklin Park Arts Center at 36441 Blueridge View Lane, in Purcellville, Virginia and all artwork will be for sale.  Matted and unframed works will also be for sale only at the opening reception.  The Flora and Fauna exhibit will continue at the Arts Center weekdays from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm, and on weekends during performances through May 24^th, 2009.  Both the reception and show are free and open to the public.

According to Barbara Sample, who has been coordinating the Flora and Fauna Art Show for the past four years, “Our gallery continues to attract patrons to the arts center for art shows as well as classes and theater performances.  This year’s show is alive with vivid colors and exceptional plants and animals from near and far.”

Daryl Davis earned his Music degree from Howard University where he was a member of their famed Howard University Choir and renowned Jazz Vocal ensemble.

In 1985, 72 year old Pinetop Perkins, one of the founding fathers of Boogie Woogie and considered to be one of the greatest blues and boogie pianists, selected 27 year old Daryl Davis to succeed him in the piano and vocal slot of the Muddy Waters Legendary Blues Band.

As a performer, Daryl Davis has worked with countless greats such as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley’s Jordanaires, and the Coasters, to name a few.  He was the featured pianist on Cephas & Wiggins Grammy Award winning album, “Flip Flop & Fly

Great Country Farms Opens for the 2010 Season

with its Annual Easter Egg Hunt and Marshmallow Harvest

Bluemont, VA…Great Country Farms, located in Bluemont, VA, will open for the 2010 season on March 27, 2010 with its 7th Annual Easter Egg Hunt and Marshmallow Harvest. This popular family event also starts off the U-pick fruit and vegetable season at Great Country Farms, Loudoun County’s popular destination for fun on the farm for the whole family. The farm will be open daily from 9 am to 6 pm during the 2010 season which runs from March 27 – Nov. 8, 2010.  Visitors to the farm will be able to harvest marshmallows from 10 am -1 pm and then roast them on a bonfire. The first of three Easter Egg Hunts will commence at 1 pm for children under 3 years of age, followed by the hunts for the older ones aged 4-6 years and 7-10 years.

“The marshmallow is quite an unusual crop and matures on or about April 1 each year like clockwork.”  said Great Country Farms’ co-owner and farmer, Kate Zurschmeide,  “Marshmallow picking is one of the season’s most popular harvests for the whole family.”  The Zurschmeide Family has been farming in Loudoun County for over 36 years. First generation Loudoun farmer, Bob Zurschmeide, will be hosting the annual bonfire where visitors are invited to roast their freshly harvested marshmallows.  “There is nothing like a freshly roasted marshmallow plucked from our trees,” said Bob Zurschmeide.

In celebration of spring and the beginning of the egg laying season, there will be three Egg Hunts this year with over 3000 treat-filled eggs. The introduction of a separate hunt for children aged 3 and under is designed to give the smallest participants a safe and unhurried atmosphere in which to hunt for eggs. The hunts for the older children are always fast and furious and attract large crowds. Participants should bring their own baskets and plan to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the start of their hunt, so that they do not miss out on the fun.

1 pm sharp                for children 3 and under

1:30 pm sharp           for children  aged 4-6 years

2 pm sharp                for children aged 7-10 years

The third generation of Loudoun-raised Zurschmeides will be helping to direct the Marshmallow Harvest and Easter Egg Hunts this season.

The annual Easter Egg Hunts, Marshmallow Peep Maze and the marshmallows to roast on the bonfire are included in the general admission price to Great Country Farms. Daily admission is $8/person, with no charge for children under 2.  Admission for Fans of the Farm season pass holders and CSA members is also free of charge.

Great Country Farms offers a Fan of the Farm season pass for $ 149.00 plus tax. This pass is valid for the entire 31 week season at the farm. Even with just one visit per month for a family of four, the pass will pay for itself within four months. Brambleton to Host First 5K to Benefit Breast Cancer

Call for Entries: “Out of the Ordinary” Creative Challenge and Forthcoming Exhibition at Franklin Park Arts Center

(Purcellville, VA) – Regional artists and craftspeople in all media are invited to participate in Out of the Ordinary, a creative challenge exhibition sponsored by Friends of Franklin Park Arts Center in collaboration with WebFabrics of Purcellville.

Out of the Ordinary will feature creative works that use all or part of a “fat quarter” (18 x 22” rectangle of fabric) donated by WebFabrics. Any media is eligible and encouraged. The only condition is that a fat quarter from WebFabrics must be used in the piece. Fabric may be manipulated, shredded, coiled, braided, glued, painted, etc. and any other materials (paper, wire, paper maché, etc.) may be used along with the fat quarter. A cash prize of $300.00 will be awarded for Best in Show and a complete set of fat quarters in 360 colors from the Collection of Hoffman Bali Batiks (an $800.00 value donated by WebFabrics) will be awarded to the Most Innovative Work.

Mischa Zupko, son of composer Ramon Zupko and pianist Phyllis Rappeport, received his Bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Northwestern University and his Master’s and Doctorate degrees in composition from Indiana University. A prolific composer, Zupko has composed several commissioned works, won numerous awards, and collaborated with virtuoso instrumentalists.  An accomplished pianist, he remains active as a performer and an ensemble conductor.  Zupko’s winning composition, Still, was chosen from 160 entries.

PURCELLVILLE, Feb. 19 – Pieces of Eight Lab Theatre (Po8) will perform James Goldman’s play The Lion in Winter in Purcellville March 14 through March 28.

A special talk-back performance will be held at the Carver Center, 200 Willie Palmer Way, on Sunday, March 14 at 2:00 pm. After that show, the cast and crew will hold a question-and-answer period. High school students are encouraged to attend this performance and will be admitted on a “Pay What You Will” basis (adult tickets will remain $10). The production will then move to the Franklin Park Performing Arts Center, 36441 Blueridge View Lane, on Friday, March 26 and Saturday, March 27 at 8:00 pm, and on Sunday, March 28 at 3:00 pm. All tickets at Franklin Park are $10.

This production will be the fifth production in the history of Pieces of Eight and the first to be staged at Franklin Park. The company was founded in the Spring of 2008, and bills itself as “Loudoun County’s only lab theatre.” Part of the company’s mission is to help audiences “deepen their enjoyment of more well-known plays through innovative and challenging new productions.”

“Lion has survived two award-winning film adaptations and countless community theatre productions,” notes director Mike Minnicino, “and these often have led audiences to expect only a medieval costume drama with big sets and grandiose declamation. Actually, Lion is very spare in its playcraft and very modern in its writing.” The new Po8 production will incorporate several aspects of classical staging practices, including universal lighting, minimal sets and costumes, close audience proximity, and the use of popular music. “In this way,” Minnicino continued, “we let Goldman’s words speak more for themselves, and the audience will be more able to see how the actors portray the subtle shifts in emotion and allegiance that the story demands.”

ANNOUNCES ITS SECOND CHARITY DRIVE FOR LOCAL HOMELESS ANIMALS

Local petsitting service again unleashes its “Have a Heart for the Homeless” donation drive

Leesburg, Va.  – Animal Au Paws, Inc (AAP) — recently named one of the “Best Petsitting/Animal Care Companies” in the area by both Washingtonian magazine and Leesburg Today — is launching its 2010 “Have a Heart for the Homeless” donation drive, Feb. 1-14.

The “Have a Heart for the Homeless” charity drive is seeking both monetary donations as well as new and used items such as blankets, pet beds, toys, dry and canned food (all donated food items must be new and unopened), treats, leashes, collars, etc. benefiting homeless animals with the Loudoun County-based PAWS Rescue of Northern Virginia, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established to rescue homeless and abandoned dogs from Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina.

The “Have a Heart” charity drive is especially meaningful for AAP this year as one of the co-founders of PAWS Rescue, Kim Larimer, is one of AAP’s dedicated pet sitters. In the early beginnings of PAWS Rescue, Larimer and co-founder, Barbara Hastings, once rescued 50 puppies from euthanasia, caring for them in Hastings’ very own garage until they were able to adopt them all out or find foster homes. Hastings’ initially was told it would be 25 but when she went to pick them up she was told the other 25 would be euthanized the next day, so she did what she had to do. She saved them all.

ANIMAL AU PAWS LAUNCHES “HAVE A HEART 2010”

“Organizations like Animal Au Paws really help us out because we rely heavily on donations to assist these homeless pets,” said Larimer.

In addition, AAP manager Denise Torelli, adopted a PAWS Rescue dog and AAP also provides service for several clients that have also adopted from PAWS Rescue.

“At AAP, we try to make it a habit to give back to the community, especially where homeless animals are concerned,” said AAP owner Rosie Bundick. “This economy has hit us all one way or another but we definitely don’t want to forget our four-legged friends. This is an endeavor that we are especially proud of, and this year with PAWS Rescue being involved, it is really close to our hearts.”

During the “Have a Heart” donation period of Feb. 1-14, several local veterinary hospitals have partnered with AAP and will have a donation box at their business, accepting both monetary and item donations.

Participating vets for Leesburg include the following: Leesburg Veterinary Hospital, Old Mill Veterinary Hospital, and Towne Animal Clinic. The following Ashburn veterinary hospitals will also serve as a drop off location: Animal Medical Centers of Loudoun and Ashburn Village Animal Hospital. Dominion Animal Hospital, Sterling Park Animal Hospital and Countryside Animal Hospital will have boxes for Sterling donations.

“It’s really wonderful that these businesses jumped at the opportunity to help participate,” Bundick said. “We couldn’t do it without their support.”

DAAR DONATES 18TH ANNUAL AUCTION PROCEEDS TO LOCAL CHARITIES

LEESBURG – For the eighteenth consecutive year, the Dulles Area Association of REALTORS® presented
donations to local charities raised from its annual silent auction conducted late last year. More than a
quarter of a million dollars has been raised and donated to local charities since the auction’s inception in
1992.
On Wednesday, January 6th, 2010, more than $33,000 raised was presented to local shelter-based
charities at a special ceremony at the DAAR Offices in Leesburg. Christmas in April/Rebuilding Together,
Good Shepherd Alliance, Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter, Loudoun Cares, Loudoun Families for
Children, Loudoun Habitat for Humanity, Volunteers of America-Transitional Housing Shelter & VoA
Emergency Homeless Shelter received 100% of the proceeds from the event.
The annual charitable event is organized by the DAAR Community Services Committee which encourages
participation in community events, facilitates volunteer opportunities and provides financial support to
local charities, with a specific emphasis on organizations that provide shelter to area residents and/or

Mid-Winter Art Show & Sale Opens January 8 at Franklin Park Arts Center

(Purcellville, VA)- The Friends of Franklin Park Arts Center invite the public to come view their inaugural Mid-Winter Invitational Art Show! All artwork will be for sale.

The show will be on display at Franklin Park Arts Center Gallery from January 8 through January 31. The Arts Center is open weekdays from 9 AM–5 PM and on weekends during concerts and events. The public is invited to attend a reception for the artists at Franklin Park Arts Center on Sunday, January 17th from 3–5 PM. The exhibit and reception are free to the public.

Artists were invited to submit their work for this show to promote the Western Loudoun Artists Studio Tour, to be held in June.

Community Holiday Coalition Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Since 1996, the Community Holiday Coalition “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” program has helped thousands of Loudoun County families have a wonderful holiday season. In 2008, we helped brighten the holidays for more than 2,000 families, including more than 4,000 children! Thanks to all who made that possible. We hope you will help us with the 2009 program.

We have both a Thanksgiving Program and Christmas Program that bring together people from all walks of life: those who need assistance and those who want to help. Each year nearly 1,000 volunteers and donors come together to “Brighten up the Holidays” for low-income Loudoun County residents.

These programs are supported by the community — churches, schools, businesses, clubs and civic organizations, youth groups and concerned individuals. They make it possible to bring the “magic” of the holiday season to so many in our community.

“Have you heard?  Rudolph has a brother, and he’s tired of being left out!”  The original holiday story is written and directed Tom Sweitzer and Benjamin Shoenberger.  New this year is the addition of original music, and puppetry.   Sweitzer is currently Supervisor of Theatre at The Hill School in Middleburg, while Shoenberger is VSA Specialist at Franklin Park Arts Center.  Production designer is Rick Conway.

The Franklin Park Arts Center plans to have a special holiday tree decorating event at every show.  Patrons are encouraged to bring a new winter hat, gloves or scarf to put on the tree and receive your choice of a beverage and snack item from our concession area free.  Your donations will be given to the Community Holiday Coalition to help those in need.  Children will also be able to visit with Santa.

How does the Loudoun Symphony celebrate the holiday season?  It presents a concert with something for everyone!  Maestro McCoy seems to have it all covered in this program—jazz, pops, Broadway, Sousa march, ballet, classical, and seasonal favorites.

Featured soloists will be Carole McNeil, vocalist and Jason Greco, pianist.  Carol began performing at the age of four and has been impressing audiences with her talent, versatility and beauty ever since.  Jason Greco, a senior at Stone Bridge, was the winner of last spring’s Loudoun’s Got Talent!, the Symphony’s new talent contest for high school students.

The program will include Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, A Most Wonderful Christmas, “My Favorite Things” from Sound of Music, “White Christmas,” “Santa Baby,” Festive Sounds of Hanukah, the ever-popular holiday sing-along, and more!  Preceding the concert will be a 7:00 pm performance by the String Workshop, an educational ensemble conducted by Dr. Yeong Su Kim, and a pre-concert lecture given by Maestro Mark Allen McCoy at 7:15 pm.

The first TUBACHRISTMAS was conducted by the late Paul Lavalle in New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974. Traditional Christmas music performed at the first TUBACHRISTMAS was arranged by American composer Alec Wilder who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980.

Today, TUBACHRISTMAS concerts are held internationally, with Loudoun Valley High School’s own Rick Reaves hosting a Loudoun County concert which will feature a group of talented Tuba and Euphonium players.

Young Musicians Back Together During Thanksgiving Break

The Acoustic Burgoo was formed in 2006. They have been privileged to play at Watermelon Park Fest, Round Hill Hometown Fest, The Bluemont Fair, The Purple Fiddle, opening for Larry Sparks, and most recently opening for Ralph Stanley and The Seldom Scene at the Franklin Park Arts Center.

Many of the band members are attending college, so this post Thanksgiving concert marks a rare appearance during the school year. A team of videographers and sound engineers will be recording the concert, and the audience will be part of the experience.

The Burgoo is made up of Rudy Bzdyk, Ben Walters, Erik Burnham and Melissa Wright, four young adults bringing a fresh sound to favorite old tunes—with a professional dedication that belies their ages. To hear traditional music filtered and re-appreciated through these talented young adults is something not to be missed.

Program:         Giant Food of Ashburn and five Loudoun churches along with the Virginia Cooperative Extension Loudoun Office will team up to present the last TWO Interactive Community Canning workshops for the season on Saturday November 14^th and Saturday November 28, 2009 at Giant Food 43330 Junction Plaza, Ashburn.

The how-to training session will feature locally grown produce.  Cost is $10 per person, which includes use of equipment three jars each of the fruit or vegetable processed.  Reservations are required so call 703-470-7790.  A portion of the proceeds go toward Loudoun Interfaith Relief.

Trainers and volunteers will be provided by the Virginia Cooperative Extension (Loudoun office), Our Savior’s Way Lutheran Church, The Community Church, Springs Gate Chapel, Loudoun Bible Church and The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints.

The volunteers enjoyed a day of recognition on October 22^nd with Congressman Frank Wolf in his Washington DC office as this event is an offshoot of the congressman’s Hunger Alliance.  Come learn about this time tested process that is enjoying a well deserved comeback!

Loudoun Lyric Opera Presents: H.M.S. Pinafore

H.M.S. Pinafore or “The Lass That Loves A Sailor”, is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and a libertto by W.S. Gilbert.  Drawing on some of his earlier “Bab Ballad” poems, Gilbert imbued this plot with mirth and silliness.  The opera’s humor focuses on love between members of different social classes and lampoons the British class system in general.

The title of the piece comically applies the name of a little girl’s garment, a pinafore, to the fearsome symbol of a naval warship.  Founded in 2007, Loudoun Lyric Opera is the resident Opera Company of Loudoun County in Northern Virginia. Through a commitment to excellence in the performing arts, Loudoun Lyric Opera strives to enrich the cultural climate of our community by providing a venue for local performers to showcase their talents, while also offering an intimate stage for aspiring singers to launch their careers to sing at leading opera houses.

The multitalented Amram, who is a virtuoso pianist, plays dozens of folkloric instruments from 25 countries and pioneered the use of the French horn as a jazz instrument. He is also an inventive improvisational lyricist and was chosen by Leonard Bernstein as the New York Philharmonic’s first composer-in-residence.

Noah Getz, a jazz and classical saxophonist who has performed at major venues throughout the United States, has commissioned and premiered several works for saxophone. The saxophone artistry of Noah Getz is dazzling.  Dr. Getz is the Saxophone Musician-In-Residence at American University and at the Levine School of Music.

Maestro McCoy opens the program with Leonard Bernstein’s rousing Overture to Candide, which is one of the most frequently performed orchestral compositions by a 20^th century American composer. 

Amram’s Ode to Lord Buckley will follow the Overture. A friend of Lord Buckley, Amram composed this work in his memory as a musical portrait of his life and times. Amram describes Lord Buckley as a “genius of spontaneous American poetry and humor.  He captured the great joy and the great melancholy of the 1940s and 50s.”

Following the intermission, the audience will delight in hearing one of the most popular symphonic pieces in the classical repertoire, the beloved New World Symphony by Antonin Dvořák.  Influenced by Native American and African American music, as well as the folk music of Dvořák’s native Bohemia, this symphony is often considered a musical parallel to the melting-pot society of the New World.

David Amram will also be presenting a lecture at Rust Library on Friday, October 24 from 3-5pm titled “World Music Roots and Real Life Experiences: How I used them to write my Saxophone Concerto Ode to Lord Buckley.”

The Loudoun Symphony takes great pleasure in presenting world class cellist Stephen Framil in recital.   Dr. Framil has performed extensively as a concert soloist both in the U. S. and internationally, including a performance of the Dvorak “Cello Concerto” with the Loudoun Symphony in  October 2008. In addition to his busy concert schedule, Framil is also a dedicated educator. He conducts master classes and is the Founder/Director of the Philadelphia Community Conservatory, a community music school that provides scholarships for inner-city youths.

Dr. Framil will be joined by pianist Daniel Lau. In constant demand by singers and instrumentalists, Dr. Lau performs widely throughout the United States and Europe as both a soloist and chamber player.

The first half of the program showcases both instrumentalists as they perform “Variations in G for Cello & Piano on a Theme by Handel” by Beethoven and the Brahms “Sonata No.1 in E minor for Cello and Piano”.  Following intermission, Framil is featured in two cello solos—Ligeti’s “Sonata for Solo Cello” and Mark Summer’s “Julie-O”.  The program will close with Tchaikovsky’s “Andante Cantabile, Op.11” and “Pezzo Capriccioso, Op.62”.

A Wine & Hors D’oeuvres Reception hosted by Friends of the Loudoun Symphony will precede the concert.

Tickets are $50 and will be used to benefit the Loudoun Symphony and its educational programs.

Thousands of area families come to the Festival every year to see not only the featured international performers, but also over 400 area performing and visual artists representing a wide range of art forms, genres, and cultures on multiple stages and in interactive arts and education tents.

Ann Rodriguez, President and CEO of the Arts Council, was thrilled to announce the line-up of young dancers.  “It’s so wonderful to have groups from all over the world come to our Festival and be joined by our local artists and arts groups,” Rodriguez said.  “I know everyone really enjoys the experience and we love to feature such an eclectic mix of artists all over the park.”

The Festival will also feature Tap Kids, eight tap-dancers ages 18 to 22 from all over the United States. The tap dancers were a fan favorite two years ago, and depict life in high school through a series of musical numbers.  These tappers are a fun, dynamic group, and will join the Festival after their recent successful national tour.

The Loudoun Symphony’s Annual Fundraising Gala, “Celebrate The Symphony” will be held Sunday, June 14th, 2009 from 4pm -to 7 pm at the Briar Patch Inn Bed & Breakfast in Middleburg.  Guests will enjoy a gracious evening in a beautiful setting featuring food, wine, and music performed by musicians of the Loudoun Symphony.

This year’s gala will start in the Fox Den foyer with a special guest cocktail reception with heavy hors d’ oeuvres, delightful flute and harp music, and a silent auction featuring art, jewelry, travel,  and an interesting array of other unique items.  Guests will “Celebrate The Symphony” as they move into the main hall of the Fox Den for an informal supper and dessert while enjoying the music of the Loudoun Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Mark Allen McCoy.  Individual tickets for the event are $75.00.
